Guest Speaker | Guest speakers: acknowledged experts?
Invite guest speakers for get-togethers - as we all know they are darlings of meetings; the experts and everyone eagerly wait for them to take the stage. But, of late, there have been some concerns about what some of these guests say while delivering their addresses. This has become a matter of concern particularly for those who deliver their addresses to school children. A guest speaker or guest speakers are acknowledged experts on issues they speak on and school authorities tend to hire those that they think would be able to connect with school children most easily. These orators in turn try their utmost to choose issues that would immediately strike a bond with their young audience. But in an attempt to become friendly with youngsters, these invited guests, at least some parents believe so, at times cross limits that these parents consider to be appropriate. Thus there has been a growing demand from parents that they are allowed to read and vet, if necessary, a copy, or at least, a summary of what these guest speakers intend to deliver when they interact with children. Way back in April 2006, a speech by guest speaker Dolores Huerta delivered at Tucson High Magnet School created quite a flutter in the community. The speech was entitled "Republicans hate Latinos" and it reportedly created quite a bit of discomfort among a large section of students. The issue kept on festering for a long time, so much so that Tucson Unified School District was forced to come out with a precise policy on hiring guest speakers. If you want to get a guest speaker, it is easy to ask for references...
