Understanding how to speak in public with outstanding presentation skills and without any fear can be an enormous asset that can place you two steps up the ladder ahead of anyone else. However, good presentation skills is not normally an attribute that occurs naturally, it is rather one that has to be worked on, honed and practiced voraciously. Successful presenters are not born that way - they have to learn the ropes from square one. One thing is very real though - the more you speak in public and before colleagues, the less you'll fear doing so. This works in both ways for you though, because the less you fear speaking in public, the more you'll enjoy the pleasures of speaking in public. Some coaches say that meaningful communication skills are all in the mind. Speech is one of the major forms of communicating your thoughts and ideas to another person - at one time it was the only form of communication. It stands to reason, then, that the way your mind controls your speech is extremely important. It is your mind that contains all of your knowledge about a particular subject, your mind that controls what you say and how you say it, and your mind that controls your gestures and facial expression. This is the fundamental essence of presentation skills basics. If the only function of your mind were to control what you were saying, then listening to you would be an unpleasant and boring task. There would be no laughter, no inspiration, and you would have no personality. Controlling your mind has to be your prime object when giving a presentation or speech. It's all in the mind.
